QUICK STATS
  • Care Level: Easy
  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive
  • Lighting: Moderate
  • Waterflow: Low to Medium
  • Placement: Bottom to Middle
  • Water Conditions: 72-78° F, dKH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, sg 1.023-1.025
  • Color Form: Green
  • Origin: Eastern Asia, South Asia
  • Family: Actinodiscidae/Discosomatidae
  • Insert Date: 6 March 2010

The Actinodiscus Mushrooms are also referred to as Mushroom Anemones and Disc Anemones. They were previously in a genus called Discosoma. These corals display a wide variety of colors, textures, and patterns. Some are solid colors, whereas, others are striped or spotted. The taxonomy of the various species is in a state of flux, and will probably continue to change.
They are hardy and moderately easy to maintain, and under the right conditions, will multiply and spread very rapidly. In general, they need a medium light level, and should be placed lower in the tank if the light intensity is high. The Actinodiscus Mushrooms prefer a low to medium water flow within the aquarium, although different species may have different requirements. They are semi-aggressive and require adequate space between themselves and other corals and sessile invertebrates. Each ships as several individual mushrooms attached to one rock.

An Actinodiscus Mushrooom receives some of its nutritional requirements through the photosynthesis of the symbiotic algae zooxanthellae which it hosts. It also feeds on other nutrients and particulate matter and benefits from additional food in the form of micro-plankton or brine shrimp fed to each polyp of the colony.

FIrst introduction

Post  thierry on Tue Mar 09, 2010 11:37 am

Not sure what species it is yet, I got it for free from the shop, just like the Red Mushroom, it wasn't attached to any rock. It's now next to the Red Mushroom, but it doesn't really unfold yet. It has a green colour to it, hopefully I will get some pictures after cleaning soon.

The road to rebuilding Pt 1

Post  thierry on Thu Apr 22, 2010 11:29 pm

The green mushroom is growing well, just like the red mushroom. Don’t really think I will change their location much. I am hoping I can find some loose mushrooms in other colours to add to the rock, because I like the colour variation on it. Only then the Halimeda has to be removed.

The road to rebuilding Pt2

Post  thierry on Fri Apr 23, 2010 4:02 pm

The mushrooms will also keep their location as much as possible. The idea is to put it on the ground level between the two tables. I want to put some more loose mushrooms around it so that the whole separation of the two tables will consist of mushrooms in all sorts of colours. It looks nice in my mind, hopefully I can make it come true Smile

The road to rebuilding Pt 3

Post  thierry on Wed May 12, 2010 4:00 pm

The Green Mushroom is also becoming bigger every day, also doing very well. Only problem is the red mushroom slowly overgrowing the green one. But we are going to try and move the red mushroom.

Rebuilding Day 1

Post  thierry on Fri May 14, 2010 11:36 am

I think it will have to battle it's own battle, moving the Red Mushroom is going to be harder then expected. We removed most of the Halimeda algae and some starting Sea Pearls from the rock.

Many new corals

Post  thierry on Fri May 28, 2010 12:08 pm

The mushrooms now have a new friend on their rock, a blue mushroom. See if everything can grow together on this rock.

June 2 2010

The mushroom rock is doing fine, the new one doesn’t really expend yet but the other two are getting very large. Curious on when they will split/multiply. Only problem is that the rock is covered with sea anemones, and also some Halimeda is showing on the rock again.

Added new Urchin, Hermit Crab and Mushrooms

Post  thierry on Tue Jun 08, 2010 3:15 pm

The first mushroom rock is pretty full, the red one is huge, the green one is getting bigger also and the blue mushroom is also starting to expend. So any new mushrooms will be put on a new and bigger rock.

The red mushroom is becoming bigger every day, the green mushroom moved to the side now to get some breathing space. The blue mushroom is growing bigger also.

Mushrooms Split

Post  thierry on Mon Jul 26, 2010 10:37 am

This weekend my girlfriend noticed something nice in the aquarium, underneath the oldest mushrooms there where two small ones. At first she blamed me for getting new corals without telling her, but then we figured the mushrooms (both red and green) split. The new ones don’t really have a solid colour yet, but I guess that is normal? One of them is turning red and the other green/red. I’m really happy about it (can’t tell right?).

The location is still mainly the same, just rotated a bit so the green mushroom is more visible.

Back from vacation

Post  thierry on Thu Sep 16, 2010 5:38 pm

The red mushroom is the oldest mushroom in the aquarium, it has been in the aquarium for 9 months and was the start of the first mushroom rock. It was 3 months later the second mushroom, a green one, was added to the rock. Then couple of months later the big rebuild started, mushrooms got a new location and a third mushroom was added to the rock (more details on him later). And now, all the mushrooms on the rock have split at least once and when we got back from vacation I spotted a purple mushroom on the rock as well (the backside of the rock). It has become one of my prides in the aquarium.

New mushrooms

Post  thierry on Thu Sep 30, 2010 1:11 pm

Removed some of the Halimeda on the rock, hopefully everything has more room now. The Blue Mushroom has problems with the Sea Anemone next to him. Also noticed it has split as well.
