  • Insert Date: 14 December 2009

The Zoanthus Button Polyp Corals are also referred to as Sea Mats, or Colonial Polyps. Their most common color is green, but are also found in other colors, such as light pink to lavender. They are colonial animals with multiple individual polyps attached to a piece of live rock.
These polyps have the ability to sting other polyps or corals. While the sting is not strong, they are semi-aggressive and need to have space between their colony and any neighbors since they tend to crowd them out. They are easy to maintain, making them a good choice for beginner reef aquarists. They require a high light level combined with a medium water movement within the aquarium. For continued good health, they will also require the addition of iodine and other trace elements to the water.

They will reproduce easily in the reef aquarium by budding (splitting off a portion of their base or mouth), which will increase the size of their colony.

They contain the symbiotic algae zooxanthellae which provide almost all of their nutritional requirements. Especially if the lighting is not optimal, they should be fed micro-plankton or baby brine shrimp.

The buttons are growing very well, hopefully they attach to the stone below soon because the rock they are on isn't very solid.

Zoanthus sp. (Button Polyp) Empty Buttons closing

Post  thierry Thu Mar 18, 2010 6:21 pm

Many of the buttons are closed and wont open anymore, they really have trouble with the algae that is spreading rapidly. Trying to keep them clean and added some coral food to hopefully let them expend again

Zoanthus sp. (Button Polyp) Empty The road to rebuilding Pt 1

Post  thierry Thu Apr 22, 2010 11:28 pm

The first stone with button polyps, it grew pretty fast when I first got them, but now the brown stuff makes it hard for the buttons to open. The location it now has is a good one, but it will move a bit in the new situation. Also hope the brown stuff stays away then.

Zoanthus sp. (Button Polyp) Empty The road to rebuilding Pt2

Post  thierry Fri Apr 23, 2010 3:25 pm

The buttons and polyps will have a nice location at the very top, where I hope they will build a sort of a bridge. They will have a lot of light there, and not too much water flow. So the idea is to have a bridge between rock pillars filled with polyps. All three polyp types will be located at the top is the idea. The button and colony polyps are already located high, but also the star polyps will be put there…if they manage to stay open for another week.

Zoanthus sp. (Button Polyp) Empty Rebuilding Day 4, the aftermath

Post  thierry Mon May 17, 2010 3:40 pm

The green buttons that where at the front are already opened, the others are closed still, but I expect them to open soon also...the new location should be very well suited for them.

Zoanthus sp. (Button Polyp) Empty The days after, Part 1

Post  thierry Tue May 18, 2010 10:40 am

The buttons are mostly closed, except for the ones now facing to the back of the aquarium. Too bad the rock fitted best this way, but you can see them from the side, and hopefully they will expend.

Zoanthus sp. (Button Polyp) Empty Many new corals

We moved the buttons a bit to a different location to make the new corals fit better. Also now more buttons are visible, instead of the biggest part facing the back wall.

Post  thierry Tue Jun 08, 2010 3:12 pm

The button polyps are still doing good. The lighter green ones are hardly visible though, but that is mainly because they are on top/back of the rock.
