The Actinodiscus Mushrooms are also referred to as Mushroom Anemones and Disc Anemones. They were previously in a genus called Discosoma. These invertebrates display a wide variety of colors, textures, and patterns. Some are solid colors, such as the blue specimen pictured above, whereas, others are striped or spotted. The taxonomy of the various species is in a state of flux, and will probably continue to change.
They are hardy and moderately easy to maintain, and under the right conditions, will multiply and spread very rapidly. In general, they need a medium light level, and should be placed lower in the tank if the light intensity is high. The Actinodiscus Mushrooms prefer a low to medium water flow within the aquarium, although different species may have different requirements. They are semi-aggressive and require adequate space between themselves and other corals and sessile invertebrates. Each ships as several individual mushrooms attached to one rock.

An Actinodiscus Mushrooom receives some of its nutritional requirements through the photosynthesis of the symbiotic algae zooxanthellae which it hosts. It also feeds on other nutrients and particulate matter and benefits from additional food in the form of micro-plankton or brine shrimp fed to each polyp of the colony.

Actinodiscus sp. (Red Mushroom) Empty Angelfish sold, tank rebuild

Post  thierry Fri Aug 06, 2010 10:16 am

The mushroom had attached itself to the rock below the one it came with. So after the rebuild he and the buttons separated. Both now have more room to grow.

Actinodiscus sp. (Red Mushroom) Empty Back from vacation

Post  thierry Thu Sep 16, 2010 1:41 pm

This Latest Red Mushroom came with a rock filled with buttons 2 months ago. When we needed to get some rocks out to catch the Angelfish the rock with buttons detached from the Mushroom, which had attached to the rock below it. So now since a month or so they live separated from each other.

Actinodiscus sp. (Red Mushroom) Empty No trace anymore?

Post  thierry Fri Oct 22, 2010 10:24 am

Yesterday the mushroom seemed to have disappeared into thin air. There was a small substance on the rock where the mushroom used to be, but besides that...nothing.

Actinodiscus sp. (Red Mushroom) Empty Found again

Post  thierry Mon Oct 25, 2010 3:05 pm

Yesterday I noticed something in the Soft Coral next to where the mushroom used to be. It looked like a dry piece of the Soft Coral, when I removed it I noticed the Red Mushroom that was lost was attached to the piece. I put it aside in the small glass I use for fragments and will move it to the fragment tank as soon as that is working.

Actinodiscus sp. (Red Mushroom) Empty Fragmented

Post  thierry Thu Nov 04, 2010 1:00 pm

The fragment tank is up and running and this one was the first big experiment. I removed it from the piece of dead coral using a sharp knife. Using the same sharp knife as before I cut the mushroom in half, straight trough the foot and mouth. Both parts are now in the fragment tank and we will see how they recover.

On the spot where the mushroom used to be a new one has evolved now.

Actinodiscus sp. (Red Mushroom) Empty Cleaning november 2010

Post  thierry Thu Nov 18, 2010 2:29 pm

The red mushroom is doing fine, he moved back into the RSM because of a vacation we took. But one half already attached to a small rock and seems to have recovered. The other half is still a bit sad, but will hopefully recover soon as well.

Actinodiscus sp. (Red Mushroom) Empty Coral sold

Post  thierry Wed Dec 01, 2010 11:19 am

Yesterday I sold my first 2 fragments. The rock with the biggest Kenya Tree fragment was sold and the rock with the 2 mushrooms on it. All together for 15 euro’s, 5 for each, not bad Smile.
I sold them to BvN, a member from Het Nederlands en Belgisch zeewateraquarium. I already got a reply from him that he had placed them in the aquarium.
BvN wrote:Tnx Smile De oortjes en keniaboom hebben ondertussen ook een plekje Smile
Thanks. The mushrooms and Kenya Tree have found a spot now as well.

Hopefully we will see some pictures soon in his journal on the forum. He does keep a journal with pictures, so I’m pretty sure we haven’t seen the last of them.

Since the other half is still located in the RSM I will keep this topic here and still cover both parts. But for the full report check this topic.

Actinodiscus sp. (Red Mushroom) Empty Sold fragments

Post  thierry Thu Jan 06, 2011 3:50 pm

Yesterday I have sold some fragments again. A member from the Zeewater Forum voor Nederland en België, called Bikerdick, wanted to buy the last Red Mushroom fragment and some Kenya Tree fragments.
He bought 4 kenya trees and the red mushroom. So hopefully we will see it's history in a different aquarium soon.
